An interview with CarrierChanger12 developer, Soongyu Kwon

Soongyu Kwon, also known as PeterDev in the jailbreak community, is an up and coming tweak developer. In this interview, Soongyu he chats about his work and future aspirations as an iOS programmer.

Q1. HOW AND WHEN DID YOU GET STARTED WITH TWEAK DEVELOPMENT?

A. Electra1131 was my first jailbreak. A month later I jailbroke my main device, I was interested in tweak developing.

I used to develop some utilities for Windows three years ago. So I started learning Objective-C.

Developing tweaks were a very interesting way of hooking up existing classes, and made me keep learning this.

Q2. HOW DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?

A. As I am a student, I get up at 7 in the morning, go to school, and come back after studying, it becomes 10 p.m.

I do random things with my computer a little after 10 p.m. every day. However, there are days when I develop tweaks all day because I have a lot of time on weekends.

Q3. WHERE CAN A NEWCOMER LEARN MORE ABOUT TWEAK DEVELOPMENT?

A. I learned tweak development from two places – http://jontelang.com/guide/chapter1/introduction.html. This guide was really helpful for me making a preference bundle.

And if you search “Tweak Development” on YouTube, you will see many tutorials by Zane Helton. It was really helpful for me too.

And after I learned how to develop some simple tweaks like showing alerts when the button clicks, I checked https://developer.limneos.net to get methods of the classes.

I’m not an expert, but feel free to DM me (@iospeterdev) if you have some problems.

Q4. HAVE YOU EVER FELT THAT TWEAK DEVELOPERS DESERVE MORE MONEY FOR DEVELOPING TWEAKS?

A. I don’t really want to make money out of it because I do it as a hobby.

But sometimes when I use an amazing free tweak by some developers, I often think that I would have bought these even if they were paid.

Q5. ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON ANY NEW PROJECT (MAY OR MAY NOT BE IOS-RELATED) OR ANY CYDIA TWEAK?

A. Yes. Currently, I’m working on almost five projects. All of these are related to jailbreaking.

Four of these are Cydia tweaks and the other is the app called Repo Store (@RepoStore). I’ve never said this before but for the first time here, Repo Store will work on jailed state also.

And one of my tweaks is about showing something on the status bar.

Q6. HOW MANY APPLE DEVICES DO YOU OWN AND CURRENTLY USE?

A. I don’t have many devices.

My main device is iPhone XS on iOS 12.1.1 waiting for a jailbreak. And I have iPhone 4S which is jailbroken on iOS 9.3.5.

I also have Apple Watch Series 2, and MacBook Pro (early 2015).

Q7. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE CYDIA TWEAKS AND APP STORE APPS?

A. My favorite tweaks are Notifica, Asteroid, JellyFish, and Sential.

And my favorite App Store apps are Spark (e-mail), nPlayer, and PES 2019. I like to play PES 2019 or watching a movie when I’m bored.

Q8. WHAT’S YOUR STANCE ON PIRACY IN THE JAILBREAK SCENE?

A. In my opinion, whether that tweak is paid or free, users should get it from the official repository.

If it’s a paid tweak, users should not pirate it because the developer of that tweak worked hard to develop it.

But I think it’s fine to pirate tweaks to check if it works on your device for a day or two and then purchase it afterward.

Q9. WHAT CAN THE COMMUNITY EXPECT FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE?

A. I’ll do my best to develop tweaks until I can. And I will open source every code that I write.

Who knows someone might learn tweak development with my code? And, I’m also planning to write a beginner guide to tweak development.

You can follow me on Twitter to support me and see the tweaks what I’m currently developing. Thank you for your attention! 😀
