Beware of “WhatsApp Subscription” Notification Scam!

WhatsApp is the most popular chat app in the world. No wonder it has been the target of spammers, scammers, and hackers for a long time.

A new subscription scam has been doing the rounds lately. Let’s find out how it works and how to stay safe.

How WhatsApp Subscription Scam works

Here’s how the WhatsApp subscription scam works –

Step 1 The attacker sends a notification that looks like it’s coming from an official source. The message informs users that they must pay 0.99 GBP to continue using WhatsApp.

Step 2 The message contains a link to a payment site.

Step 3 User pays the amount to the scammer.

Step 4 Scammer makes good money by ripping off thousands of users.

Some unsuspecting users will pay eventually and the scammers will end up having a solid payday.

Even knowledgeable users can end up getting scammed here because it asks for just $0.99. 99 cents is a ridiculously low amount for having the ability to send unlimited messages.

This not a problem for jailbreakers because they are well-versed in all things technology. But for the average user, it’s very easy to fall into this trap.

How to Keep Yourself Safe Online

  • If you received this message, delete it as soon as possible.
  • Always keep your device protected by installing an antivirus application.

The best way to stay safe online is to know what you’re clicking on. Not many viruses or scams can affect you if you don’t click on the bogus link.

But once you do, it gets executed and your device is infected.
