Apple releases iOS 12 to the public

After twelve betas, Apple has finally seeded the final version of iOS 12 to the public. Here’s how you can download and install this update on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

What’s new in iOS 12.0?

Finally, iOS 12 (build number 16A366) has been released for 47 compatible devices. iOS 12 is an operating system that offers better performance and improves a lot upon its buggy predecessor – iOS 11.

It also brings new features such as group FaceTime (to be released in a later update), Memojis, new Animojis, camera effects and more goodies for iMessage and FaceTime. Further, the digital wellbeing is managed using Screen Time and can be controlled with app limits and time-out features.

The revamped notification system now groups notifications by app. You can manage your notifications straight from the lock screen.

On the other hand, if you do not want to be disturbed, you can easily activate the “Do not disturb” mode either temporarily or only for a specific location without worrying about disabling it each time you turn it on.

The photos app also brings a lot of new improvements. The search function works better and your device can recognize objects, places, present in the photos. If you’ve taken a group photo, Siri intelligently suggests that you can share the shot with your contacts in the photo.

You can download this update by installing the OTA Profile from Settings > General > Software Update. Alternatively, you can use iTunes or the IPSW firmware files given below if you want to clean restore your device.

Remember, you will not get this update in the Settings if you are already on the Gold Master. The reason being that today’s update is, in fact, the GM update that was seeded five days ago.

Should you upgrade?

As regards stability and performance, iOS 12 is the better firmware as compared to iOS 11. Therefore, if you are not already on the iOS 12 Gold Master build, you should definitely upgrade your Apple device.

For those of you who are still running a jailbreak, keep your jailbreak and wait for an iOS 12 exploit to drop. If you still wish to update just to try out new features, install this version only on a secondary device.
