Comex’s Substitute to be ported to Meridian iOS 10-10.3.3 jailbreak

Electra already comes bundled with Comex’s Substitute and developers are now working on integrating Cydia with it. The exact same scenario is unfolding out on the iOS 10.3.3 scene now.

Ben Sparkes to bundle Substitute with Meridian jailbreak

Ben Sparkes is working on a Substitute port for iOS 10.3.3 and older versions.

Comex’s open-source Substrate alternative will allow tweaks to run on Meridian jailbreak just like Electra toolkit.

Here’s what the young developer wrote on Twitter.

You can already add Substitute to Meridian if you have enough programming experience. According to Ben here’s how you can do that –

  • Develop the “jailbreakd” daemon or any other entitlement process.
  • Set up the necessary launch daemons.
  • Hook these daemons into Meridian once it injects the exploits.

This tool already comes with Cydia but it’s not functional since it requires a Substrate update. If you want to use Meridian jailbreak for testing purposes, you can download it from this link.

How is a Substitute port useful?

Here’s why this development is incredibly useful for iOS 10 users, especially those who own an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 plus.

  • Comex’s Substitute will get jailbreak tweaks running on your Apple device just like Cydia.
  • Cydia will become functional and will no longer display errors.
  • Tweak compatibility will remain largely unaffected, just as on iOS 11. However, some tweaks may require a rewrite for Substitute.

When will Meridian get an update?

Prior to this tweet, Sparkes clarified that he could work on a port given there’s enough interest and Saurik doesn’t release anything.

The only thing stopping him from doing so was a Substrate update by Saurik. This would have forced him to remove Substitute and other stuff at a later stage.

It now seems like he’s indeed going through with his plans as we are yet to hear anything from Saurik.

As of now, the developer is yet to provide an ETA. According to me, an update will come in a week or two since the development is still in early stages.

Although it has been a while since Meridian came out, it will still prove useful to a lot of users. I highly doubt Saurik will release anything before late February.
