WhatsApp to allow users to download account info

WhatsApp just updated its privacy policy in accordance with the new European guidelines. Here’s how you can download all your data that WhatsApp stores on its servers.

WhatsApp now offers better privacy to users

Facebook has updated WhatsApp’s privacy policy in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

In its latest blog post, WhatsApp reaffirms that they will never compromise with the privacy of its user-base.

One of the main highlights of this update is the new “Request account info” feature. This option allows users to download all their data from WhatsApp servers.

WhatsApp Europe update

You can’t use this option on the latest version installed on your device. It’s a part of the upcoming update that will soon be released worldwide on the App Store.

Though they can’t snoop in around your conversations, it’s still good to know that you can access your private information at any point in time.

Moreover, WhatsApp has again mentioned that your data is not shared with any third-party service or Facebook.

Requesting your WhatsApp data

  • Open WhatsApp.
  • Go to Settings > Account > Request account info.
  • Tap Request report to request your data. It can take up to 3 days for them to fulfill your request.
  • When your report is available for download, you will receive a notification.
  • To download your report, go to Request account info > Download report.

The aforementioned report is nothing but a ZIP archive containing an HTML and a JSON file, both of which can be used to view your data locally or through an external app.
