How WhatsApp Dark Mode works
Though a lot of social networking and messaging apps now have a stock dark mode, WhatsApp is yet to implement this feature. The stock bright theme puts unnecessary strain on the eyes during nighttime. This is where this new tweak comes in.
WhatsApp Dark Mode Cydia tweak adds an OLED-friendly dark mode theme to iPhone X and older models. It is developed by tweak creator Neo Ighodaro.
Among the many qualities that make this tweak stand out is its use of pure black. It changes the text to green color, which blends in perfectly with the black look.
Here’s how the dark mode looks like in action.
It has no Settings or preferences menu. All you need to do is press the install button and it will start working out-of-the-box.
While this is useful for newbies, power users like me want more control and separate disable option would have been nice.

It looks so stunning as if it was a native WhatsApp feature. Until the messaging app introduces its own night or black mode, you can keep using this tweak. Highly recommended.
Usually, the native dark themes popular applications implement are way too bright. For example, Twitter and YouTube apps use a dark blue color, which is not a “true” dark mode.
Even if WhatsApp comes up with this feature somewhere down the line, this tweak will still be useful.
WhatsApp Dark Mode is available for download on TapSharp Cydia repo (cydia.tapsharp.com). It is compatible with iOS 11.
Known issues and bugs
- The chat bubbles are way too bright in the beta version. The developer is aware of the issue and might add a manual text selection option in future versions.
- It can break your chat wallpaper. You can fix this issue by removing the tweak.
- No option to switch to the default theme.
