WhatsApp app uses ticks to indicate the status of sending and receiving a message. Here’s how you can disable those dreaded blue ticks and read messages without your friends or contacts knowing that you have read them.

Why should you disable blue ticks?

Before you begin, acquaint yourself with the meaning of the various icons WhatsApp uses to notify its users.

• Single green tick – Message sent but not received.
• Double green ticks – Message sent and received.
• Double blue ticks – Message sent, received, and read.

The blue ticks allow the sender to know that you have read the message. What this does is puts unnecessary pressure on you because you must send a reply now that the sender knows that you have already read it.

While this is not a problem when you have time, this can cause anxiety when you are running out of time.

1. Disable Double Blue Ticks

Remember, this feature works both ways – your contacts will not be able to know if you read their messages but neither will you.

• Go to Settings.
• Go to the Account section and then tap Privacy.
• Toggle off Read Receipts.

2. iOS Notifications

iOS displays all the notifications from your apps applications in the Notification Center. If you read a WhatsApp message directly from the Notification Center, it will not be marked in as read.

For the two blue ticks to appear, you must be inside the chat.
