Nintendo Launches Nintendo Switch Online App for iOS

Nintendo has launched its official voice chat app for the iOS. Here’s how it works.

How Nintendo Switch Online Works

Nintendo Switch Online is not an emulator for iOS, it’s a companion app for your Switch. This app aims to enhance your gaming experience.

This app comes just in time for the release of team-based third person shooter, Splatoon 2. This app provides access to SplatNet 2, where you can check your score and see the rankings.

You can voice chat with other players using a compatible headset. In addition to the voice chat, Nintendo Switch Online also allows you to invite other users from social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

Why will this app be a disaster?

At the time of writing, Nintendo Switch Online just has a 2 stars rating in the App Store and rightfully so.

Instead of integrating the chat system inside the console, they have put it in your smartphone. You also need to walk to a physical location in-game and only then can you start team-based games.

Moreover, your smartphone should remain with the chat open at all times. This will drain your battery within minutes. There’s no landscape mode in the app as well.

As if this wasn’t enough, Nintendo has something even more annoying in the store for you. You need to have a headset that plugs into an adapter that plugs into your iPhone that plugs into your Switch!

The app is so bad it’s more of a liability than a companion. I really hope they fix this mess of an app and allow chat within the console itself.

As of now, Nintendo Switch Online is destined for failure. I would really like to see if the status quo changes in the future.

This app might gain traction once the Switch gets more games titles in the future. I guess it should be clear by now why I don’t recommend it.

Nintendo also intends to release a subscription-based version sometime in 2018. I don’t think that will be needed because the app has failed to garner good reactions from the users.

If you are willing to give it a whirl, get it from App Store and sync it with your Nintendo account.

Nintendo Switch Online is available for download on the App Store for free. It works on iPhone, iPad, and iPod and is compatible with iOS 9 and newer firmware versions.
