A Candid Conversation with Lubos Volkov, top UI Designer

I’m back with another candid conversation with an ace UI designer. Read the full conversation below.

First of all, I would like to introduce you to Lubos Volkov. He is one of the best UI (User Interface) designers in the world and currently works for Toptal as their lead designer.

Q1. How and when did you get started with UI design?

A. I started doing UI design almost 9 years ago. To make the long story short, I dropped out of college (Electrotechnical Engineering).

After one long and stressful year there, I realized that that’s not a place where I want to gain knowledge. In that moment, I wasn’t exactly sure what to do I was lost…but I luckily remembered that I have Photoshop installed on my computer.

I turned it on and it sucked me in. For one year I locked myself up in my room and I was trying different design (mostly app) concepts.

After one year I got lucky and landed my first job in a startup based in the Silicon Valley (in the plug and play accelerator).

Ever since then I was working hard to get where I am right now – working with big international clients and startups.

Q2. Your new iPhone X notch concept looks absolutely stunning! How much time did it take you to design it?

A. Thank you. I spent my Sunday night on it. In general about 2-3 hours including motion design.

Q3. Your concept became an instant hit with the jailbreak community! Would you like seeing it as a jailbreak tweak?

A. I think it could be nice to see it come alive. But people need to keep in mind that it wasn’t validated or tested so it might require some additional tweaks.

Q4. You have designed some amazing concepts in the past. Is anyone working on realizing them?

A. Most of my concepts are just explorations during my free time but some of them have been realized, though.

Q5. Do you own an iPhone? If yes, what are your favorite apps?

A. Since I work with apps on daily basis, I had to own an iPhone to test out the design and interactions.

My favorite apps are Spotify and Instagram.

Q6. What can we expect from you in the future – any specific UI design projects you would like to inform us about?

A. There are a lot of ideas in my head and I am working on them one by one. Currently, I am working on an electric car interface.
