iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max – Features, Specs, and Release Date

Apple officially announced the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max at the Gather Round event tonight. The iPhone XS is based on the existing iPhone X but offers a number of new features. Check out its specs below.

iPhone XS Design

The iPhone XS has the same appearance as the iPhone X and is available in the usual colors – space gray and silver. In addition, there is a new gold color.

All versions have a steel frame around the screen of the same color. The smallest model with a 5.8-inch screen is similar in size to the existing iPhone X.

iPhone XS release date, price, specs

Moreover, Apple is going to release a larger version with a 6.5-inch screen called iPhone XS Max. For people who have recently followed the rumors around the new iPhones, this will not be a surprise, because many details were leaked in advance.

iPhone XS Specifications

The smartphone is equipped with a TrueDepth camera on the front and a dual camera on the back. As expected, the smartphone does not have a Touch ID button at the bottom of the screen but uses Face ID biometric technology.

At the bottom, you will also find the Lightning connection and the speaker holes. Other details such as the notch and the placement of the buttons are, of course, similar to its predecessor – the iPhone X.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of major improvements on the hardware side of things. The rating is now IP68 so that it is even more water-resistant.

iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max Features

1. Ultra-powerful A12 Bionic Chip

The new A12 Bionic chip has a 4-core GPU and 6-core CPU (3 fast and 3 energy-efficient). All these cores can be active at the same time. The A12 Bionic has 6.9 billion transistors and it is also the first 7-nanometer chip in the world.

The GPU of the A12 is 50 percent faster than the A11. The A11 could perform 600 billion calculations per second whereas the A12 is able to perform 5 trillion calculations per second!

2. Enhanced Smart HDR-ready 12MP Camera

The XS has two 12-megapixel cameras and an improved True Tone flash at the back. The top camera (f/1.8) has a wide-angle lens and a new sensor. At the bottom, there is a telephoto camera (f / 2.4) with 2x optical zoom. Both work with optical image stabilization.

The front camera is 7 megapixel (f/2.2) with a faster sensor. Thanks to the A12 processor, the camera is smarter than and can recognize red eyes automatically.

One trillion operations are performed for each photograph. New features include Smart HDR that helps you click pictures with better colors.

Further, the portrait mode gets better on the iPhone XS. You can now set the depth of field by simulating different aperture settings.

3. Face ID and camera improved with Smart HDR

There is an improved Face ID sensor in the two iPhones. This runs on an improved version of the secure enclave chip (SEP) and new algorithms that ensure that your face is recognized faster and also unlocks the device.

The usage (and notch in the screen) remains the same as in the iPhone X.

4. Improved Battery life

Apple has also improved the battery life of the new iPhones.

The iPhone XS lasts half an hour longer compared to the iPhone X, while the iPhone XS Max will last for an hour and a half. Not a huge difference, but a nice improvement nonetheless.

5. Dual SIM support

You can use two SIM cards at the same time. But here’s the catch – the special dual-SIM edition will only be released in China. In other countries, you can combine a physical SIM card with an eSim, if your carrier supports it.

Price and Release Date

The iPhone XS will be available in the US from $999. The iPhone XS Max, on the other hand, will start at $1099.

Both models also offer 256GB and 512GB of storage space. However, the prices for these models are slightly higher than the base models.

XS Max costs a whopping $1,249 for the 256GB model while the 512GB will set you back for $1,449. The XS 256GB model costs $1,149 whereas the 512GB version costs $1,349.
