Coolstar’s jailbreak tool bricks nullpixel’s iPhone X

Just when everyone was gearing up for a Cydia release, Coolstar’s jailbreak tool bricked nullpixel’s device. Here’s what happened behind the scenes.

Coolstar’s jailbreak wipes out baseband firmware

As you know, Coolstar was all set to release a Cydia update on February 15. However, his plans have hit a roadblock and things seem to have taken a turn for the worse.

Just hours ago, the latest version of Electra bricked developer nullpixel’s iPhone X.

Apart from nullpixel, another developer’s device also came under the ambit.

Here’s what Coolstar posted on Twitter.

Surprisingly, it wasn’t Cydia that bricked their devices. The bootstrap with Cydia was running just fine on nullpixel’s iPhone X and he tweeted about it too.

The problem lies with the bash script that Coolstar implemented to uninstall LiberiOS jailbreak.

This script completely wiped out the baseband firmware from the test devices. This means those devices have no cellular connectivity now and are unable to use other cellular functions as well.

These test devices continue to function as extremely expensive iPods and, of course, as paperweights.

Can the iPhone X be unbricked?

TSS Saver saved bogus SHSH Blobs for iPhone X and iPhone 8/8+ models. This effectively rules out any restore to iOS 11-11.1.2 with FutureRestore.

However, this doesn’t mean these devices will stay bricked forever.

The best to combat this problem is to restore the device to the latest signed version with iTunes. This will restore the baseband firmware to its original state.

When will Cydia be released?

This whole fiasco will definitely delay a full-blown Cydia release by a few days.

Coolstar owns just one Apple device (an iPad), which also doubles up as his daily driver.

This is why he wasn’t able to test the “remove.sh” script because he owns a Wifi model that doesn’t have a baseband.

While it suffices for testing purposes, he certainly misses the opportunity to thoroughly test his tools on modern devices such as the iPhone X.

Thankfully, quite a few members of the jailbreak community have come forward and offered him test devices.

If you would like to donate or gift him a device for testing, kindly do so.
