CoolBooter is a tweak available on Cydia that will greatly interest hackers and modders. Let’s find out more about this amazing tool.

How Coolbooter Dual boot Utility Works

Coolbooter utility allows you to dual boot 2 iOS firmware versions on your iPhone or iPad. For example, running iOS 6 and iOS 9 together on a single iOS device is now possible with Coolbooter.

  • Update (July 22) –  Coolbooter now supports A5 Rev A models.

The developer, Jonathan Seal, has also uploaded a video on Youtube demonstrating how this tool works on the iPhone 5.

This seemed too far-fetched on an iOS device until now. While Windows OS is easy to tweak, dual booting on an extremely secure and “closed” mobile platform such as iOS is much more complicated.

Thanks to Coolbooter, you can easily run two different versions of iOS firmware on your device. It currently supports going from any iOS firmware to iOS 6.

Why is CoolBooter Useful?

Dual booting different operating systems on a single machine is not new. It is frequently used on desktops (Hackintosh). This is how the process looks like –

  • The user installs two different operating systems on a computer.
  • When the PC boots, you can select either one of the operating systems.
  • The new OS can now be used normally along with the default OS.

The newer firmware requires advanced hardware for optimal performance. As older devices have outdated hardware, performance often goes downhill when you update. This is where Coolbooter utility comes in.

If you are stuck on iOS 8 or 9, CoolBooter will let go you go back to a stable firmware (iOS 6) while still keeping your stock firmware.

Which Devices are Compatible with CoolBooter?

Coolbooter is only compatible with 32-bit devices – iPhone 5 and older models. It does not support 64-bit devices because they don’t have kloader.
