Apple Watch 3 – LTE Connectivity and other new features

Apple announced the new Apple Watch in its September 12 keynote. Here’s all you need to know about it.

LTE Connectivity

LTE connectivity is the main selling point of the new Apple Watch. That the Apple Watch has an LTE connection does not mean that we can navigate with it as if it were an iPhone with 4G.

Apple Watch Series 3 comes with an Intel modem that allows you to connect to the Internet at a speed 2.5 times greater than 3G.

Thanks to this chip with the Apple Watch we can do things like:

  • Make calls without your iPhone
  • Stream music
  • Browse maps
  • Access Siri
  • Receive notifications from social networks

Apple Watch Series 3 will use an eSIM. This means you will still need to pair it with an iPhone. This will, however, require compatibility with your carrier and extra charges will also apply.

Powerful Hardware

Apple Watch Series 3 also comes with more powerful hardware. The new Apple S3 chip has more power than its predecessors. It features a new dual-core processor that gives it a significant 70% performance boost.

As far as the battery goes, the battery life is still the same with 18 hours. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity increases by 85% and is 50% more efficient, thanks to its new W2 chip.

The microphone has also comes with a few new improvements. You can now call without bringing the Watch very close to your mouth.

Tried and tested Design

Apple Watch has retained the tried and tested design of the older models. This comes as a surprise since many rumors indicated that the upcoming model will feature a new design.

Apple has also introduced new straps and other exclusive ones. The current straps now also come in more colors. The build quality remains the same and Apple has used the following materials – aluminum, stainless steel, and ceramics.

The LTE variant of this Apple Watch also has a new red digital crown. On the whole, the design and exterior have essentially remained unchanged.

watchOS 4

The Apple Watch is heavily dependent on the watchOS for a lot of its functionality. To make effective use of hardware, we need good software that works in conjunction with it. This is exactly what the new firmware version is supposed to do.

It will bring new features, modes, dials, and a dock to quickly switch between apps and widgets.

Price and Availability

The new Apple Watch Series 3 will hit the shelves on September 22. You can already pre-order it from September 15. The price will start at $329 and $399 for the models without and with LTE connectivity.

All in all, it’s a small upgrade with LTE connectivity. Therefore, I don’t know if a lot of Apple Watch users will be upgrading anytime soon.
