Apple’s 2017 Year in Review – iPhone X, Gadgets, Scandals, and more

2017 was a great year for Apple. They released plenty of smartphones, tablets, gadgets, and earned truckloads of money. Here’s a quick rundown of Apple’ best devices of 2017.

Smartphone of the year – iPhone X

iPhone X is without a doubt the most innovative smartphone by Apple thus far.

It marks the end of the run-of-the-mill iPhone design and comes with a unique frameless display that is not present in any other iPhone.

Not a single day went past that we didn’t read about iPhone X and its features.

Although some Android devices performed better than iPhone in benchmarks, none of them could match the popularity and the hype surrounding the X.

This is my everyone considers Apple’s latest flagship as the smartphone of the year.

Best-selling iPhone of the year – iPhone 7

Even after Apple rolled out iPhone X, the iPhone 7 continued to dominate the sales charts in 2017.

Apple reduced its price by quite a bit and this resulted in an absolute explosion of its sales.

What further boosted its sales was the availability various jailbreak tools that work on a range of firmware versions.

iPhone 7 comes with the A10 processor and can still compete with modern devices with the A11 Bionic chipset.

Moreover, iPhone 7/7+ never slows down or hangs and is a beast of a device with or without a jailbreak.

Best competitor of the year – Samsung Galaxy S8

As always, Samsung continues to be the primary competitor of the iPhone. There aren’t many devices that can go toe-to-toe with Apple’s iPhone.

However, Samsung still remains the most sought-after Android device and the only smartphone that can give the iPhone X a run for its money.

There are other decent Android devices such as Google Pixel but they fall short of providing an alternative for iPhone X.

Best Accessory of the year – AirPods

AirPods continue to smash the charts and are the best accessory in 2017 for the iPhone. Although it’s a bit too overpriced, Apple keeps running out of stock for its wireless earbuds.

As of now, AirPods are still out of stock and you can only purchase them after a few months maybe. If you already own AirPods, check these accessories out.

Weirdest gadget of the year – HomePod

When Apple unveiled its smart speaker, everyone was confused and had no idea what that white gadget was. Even the name was too wacky and didn’t have an “i” in front of it as everyone expected.

HomePod seems like a viable competitor of Amazon Alexa and Google Home at the outset.

However, there are not many details available as to when it will be released or what innovative features it will bring to differentiate itself from its competitors.

HomePod is yet to be released since Apple is still applying the finishing touches. It will likely go on sale sometime in the first quarter of 2018.

Worst gadget of the year – Apple Watch Series 3

Apple Watch Series 3 is by far the most useless wearable gadget of 2017.

There are several reasons as to why I think it is the most useless gadget by Apple –

  • There’s not much you can do except keeping a tab on your notifications and the time.
  • There’s no jailbreak for Apple Watch yet, which further drives away power users.

It’s a highly underutilized device that has a lot of potential but I don’t see the status quo changing in the coming months or even year.

Scandal of the year – Batterygate

A few weeks ago, a 17-year old techie revealed that Apple is throttling iPhone performance based on the battery health.

The fiasco quickly snowballed into the worst scandal in the history of Apple.

It generated huge negative press and the Cupertino giant was forced to apologize to its users.

iPhone Battery Life

Apple will now offer a whopping $50 discount on each battery replacement and a free stock application for tracking battery status and its health.

Worst feature of the year – Forever-on WiFi

The forever-on WiFi is undoubtedly the worst feature of the year.

For the uninitiated, users can no longer disable WiFi from the Control Center and it remains switched on in the background.

Modern smartphones already have plenty of battery-intensive apps. This feature only worsens the situation and is a nightmare for those who are into jailbreaking and modding.

wifi

Thankfully, you will be able to disable WiFi completely when a proper jailbreak tool comes out.
