Top 3 Android Smartphone alternatives for a Jailbroken iPhone

There are plenty of Android devices that are touted as competitors for Apple’s iPhone. But is there any Android device that can truly replace a jailbroken iPhone? Let’s find out below.

Why are jailbreakers looking for Android smartphones?

As you already know, it has been ten months since the last iOS jailbreak was released. This certainly indicates that the jailbreak scene is not what it used to be.

Furthermore, Apple’s latest smartphones, iPhone 8/8+ and iPhone X, will have to wait for a very long time to receive a jailbreak.

Therefore, a lot of jailbreakers have actually been wanting to jump ship to Android.

Android

Now, a lot of different smartphone manufacturers use Android and it has an absolutely humongous lineup.

The market is flooded with thousands of Android devices as compared to Apple’s only smartphone, the iPhone. And this is why I decided to make a dedicated list for the jailbreak community.

Here’s a list of my favorite Android smartphones that are comparable to a jailbroken iPhone.

My selection criteria

Before we move onto the complete list, I want to ensure everyone knows why I chose these smartphones.

1. Hardware

iPhone comes with a solid hardware-software combination and this is what I looked for before selecting an Android smartphone. The devices below come with decent hardware and software combo.

This is actually more important than anything else, even an active developer community.

2. Modding Community

XDA community is akin to the iOS jailbreak scene. A healthy and active community indicates a better customization potential for a device.

I have already performed the necessary checks prior to forming this list.

You can be assured that these devices given below are still being worked on and the support is good. They are also receiving updates on a daily basis.

3.Price

iPhone has a premium look and feel to it that is missing from all Android devices. This is why not a lot of users are willing to pay a premium for an Android smartphone.

I have taken care that the selected smartphones are decently priced and don’t cost a bomb.

3. Huawei Nexus 6P

Although the Nexus 6P is a bit too old now, it continues to be a great smartphone even in 2017. It can still run the latest iteration of Android without slowing down a bit.

Above all, it has a lot of ROMs available for download and a healthy unofficial developer community that is still active.

Here are a few popular ROMs that you can try –

  • A.O.K.P.
  • LineageOS (formerly CyanogenMod)
  • OmniROM

On the whole, it’s a great budget device that still sells well and is well worth its price tag.

  • Release date – September 29, 2015
  • Price – $350

2. OnePlus 5

OnePlus 5 is yet another great Android smartphone that has seemingly unlimited customization.

Since it was released in 2017, it comes with all the latest features that are now considered standard in the Android smartphone lineup.

Here are a few ROMs that you can try on this device –

  • AOSiP
  • Nitrogen OS
  • OmniROM
  • NoLimits

It is already a hit in the smartphone market and certainly offers great hardware and software on a budget.

1. Google Pixel 2

If there’s an Android smartphone that actually comes closer to a jailbroken iPhone, it is the Google Pixel.

Google Pixel 2 does everything a jailbroken iPhone does, fully out of the box. You can also download apps from the Google Play Store for even more customization.

Google Pixel 2

The unofficial developer scene for Pixel 2 is quiet at the moment as this device is still in infancy. However, the original Googe Pixel still has a helpful developer community that is as active as ever.

If you have got a bit of spare cash, this Android smartphone is probably your best bet right now. Remember, the Pixel 2 comes with an unlocked bootloader, except the Verizon model.

If you really want to buy one right now, I suggest steering clear of carrier devices as they can’t be modded by installing custom ROMs or kernels.

  • Release date – October 19, 2017
  • Price – $649

Will you make the switch?

Again, this doesn’t mean you should make the switch at all costs.

I am just saying that if you miss your jailbroken iPhone way too much, getting the right Android smartphone can actually prove beneficial in the long run.

Are you going to make the switch and leave your iPhone? If yes, be sure to leave a comment below.
